Email Design: Keeping Your Email Code Clean

When it comes to designing your email campaign, keeping your HTML code
clean is an important step to making sure you always reach your subscribers
inbox. Hiding unnecessary content in your code could end up hurting your
deliverability.
When your HTML code has been poorly written it could interpret your
email message as something it isn’t and it could very well end up sending your
email campaign to the spam folder.
Before sending your email campaign take a look at the below list on
things that you should not include in your email code. If you are not quite
sure, talk with the person in charge of designing your email campaigns.
  • Bad tags, too many closing tags
  • Incorrectly nested tags
  • Font color too similar to background color (It could fade it all
    together)
  • Embedded Javascript
  • Extra-large font sizes
  • An invalid font face on your fonts
  • HTML comments in your code
  • Characters that are not standard characters

Wondering why this makes a different to your email campaign? When your
email code has tags or anything else that shouldn’t be in there it makes the
email campaign longer. Apart from possibility triggering spam filters, an email
campaign with lengthier html code will take longer to load for your
subscribers. Keeping it clean will ensure your email loads faster and your
subscribers can begin reading the campaign.
Another tip is to double and even triple check all the links within the
campaign. A typo in a link can flag it as suspicious, or worse, send your
subscriber to an actual spam site. Make sure your links are well formatted and
link to real pages on your website.
